Our coaching team come to St Andrews with a wealth of experience gained across the game at international, professional, age-grade and development levels and understand the balance between academic and athletic achievement.
Director of Rugby
Scott was appointed Director of Rugby at the University of St Andrews after an extensive international career playing for Scotland.
He joined the University from Newcastle Falcons, bringing a wealth of experience playing Premiership rugby for over a decade.
Scott started his rugby career at Biggar RFC, before earning a professional contract at Glasgow Warriors, spending four seasons playing in the Pro12 before a move to the Premiership, spending a season with Sale before moving to Gloucester Rugby for four years.
He is a vastly experienced former Scotland international with 47 caps, which include a try-scoring performance in his team’s opening match of the 2007 Rugby World Cup while also appearing in the 2011 tournament.
In addition to his playing commitments with Newcastle Falcons, Scott was Director of Rugby at National Two North Club Tynedale RFC, having previously been an Elite Specialist Skills Coach with Scottish Rugby. He has recently joined the Scotland U20 coaching team for the upcoming Six Nations and Junior World Cup.
Women’s 1st XV Lead Coach
Sarah Hogwood is the Scottish Rugby Development Officer for Dundee and Angus and the Assistant Development Officer at Perthshire Rugby.
A UKCC Level 3 coach, Sarah leads the St Andrews Women’s 1st XV and brings her specialised knowledge of the Women’s game both at senior and age grade level, alongside her expertise in coaching regional academy sides.

Gary Anderson is entering his twelfth year coaching the Saints and despite taking on added responsibilities as a fire and rescue reserve in addition to his position as Programme Manager at Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), his winning combination of sagely wisdom and good humour are thankfully still active at the club, keeping us grounded.
Gary is a UKCC Level 3 qualified coach and holds a Masters in Game Sense in Coaching from Abertay University.
North-East Fife Rugby Development Officer
Callum was appointed as the North-East Fife Rugby Development Officer in October 2019. This exciting new position is jointly funded by St Leonards, the University of St Andrews, Scottish Rugby and Madras Rugby Club, with the aim of growing youth rugby in St Andrews.
Callum’s role involves actively promoting the ethos of Scottish Rugby, creating a resource across North-East Fife to facilitate, deliver and support the development and sustainability of rugby programmes within local schools, the University and club environments.
Prior to being appointed to the post, Callum, who is originally from Kirkcaldy, completed a BSC (Hons) in Sports Development and Coaching at Abertay University, and worked with both the Strathmore Community Trust in Forfar, making rugby inclusive and accessible to adults and children with autism and other disabilities, and Glasgow Life.
His previous experience also includes over seven years as a volunteer coach with Kirkcaldy Rugby Wee Blues and captaining the Abertay University team in their 2018 Scottish Cup winning season. He continues to play with National 3 newcomers Strathmore Rugby Club.
